What to Do If You’re in a Motor Vehicle Accident in New Hampshire

Accidents happen in an instant, and the aftermath is often overwhelming. In New Hampshire, distracted driving, wrong-way drivers, and other roadway hazards are serious concerns. Knowing what to do at the scene of a motor vehicle accident in New Hampshire—especially if you weren’t at fault— can preserve your legal rights and strengthen your ability to recover financially later on.

  1. Check for injuries and get to safety. Assess your injuries and check on your passengers. Get everyone to a safe location nearby and turn on your hazards.
  2. Stay at the scene, call 911, and wait for emergency responders to arrive. Allow EMTs to evaluate you, even if your injuries seem minor. When speaking with the police, provide a clear and accurate account of what happened. If you’re unable to give a statement at the scene, arrange to visit the station later to complete one as soon as possible.
  3. Exchange information. Obtain the other driver’s name, address, phone number, and insurance and vehicle details.
  4. Document everything. Write down the date, time, location, weather, traffic conditions, and a brief description of the crash.
  5. Take photos. Capture vehicle damage, skid marks, street signs, and any visible injuries.
  6. Obtain witness information. Names, phone numbers, and statements can help establish what really happened.
  7. Be polite and do not admit fault.
  8. Seek medical care promptly. Tell the doctor you were in a motor vehicle accident and follow all instructions.
  9. Notify your insurance carrier. Report the accident and follow claim procedures.
  10. Keep records. Request a copy of the accident report from the police; retain all receipts for towing, car repairs, medical expenses, and transportation.
  11. Contact an attorney as soon as possible. A lawyer can explain your rights, deal with insurers, and help you pursue compensation.
