The Dangers of Using Fake IDs

In New Hampshire, using a fake ID is a serious offense with significant immediate and long-term consequences. While it may seem like a harmless act, especially among college-aged students seeking to gain access to bars or purchase alcohol, law enforcement considers the possession of false identification a serious offense.

If caught with a fake ID, the cardholder can expect to be charged with at least a Class B misdemeanor with penalties including a fine of up to $1,200. However, the cardholder may also be charged with a Class A misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine. Further, minors in possession of alcohol, attempting to purchase alcohol, or under the influence of alcohol may also face violation-level charges with penalties, including fines and potential loss of license.

The consequences of a minor being caught with a fake ID extend well beyond financial penalties and judicial proceedings. Criminal and alcohol-related convictions can affect many aspects of a young person’s life, including scholarship awards, eligibility for financial aid, school enrollment, housing, acceptance into the military, and future employment.

New Hampshire has implemented the REAL ID Act, a coordinated effort by states and the federal government to prevent individuals from evading detection using fake or fraudulently obtained driver’s licenses or identification.

Using fake IDs in New Hampshire is a serious offense with far-reaching effects. It is crucial for young adults, especially those in college, to understand these risks and make informed decisions. Remember, the ability to access a bar or purchase alcohol is not worth the long-term consequences that can potentially impact your future.
