Riders Beware: Increase in Police Detail Targets Impaired Drivers This Summer
Summertime in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region means connecting with friends at Laconia Motorcycle Week, attending concerts at the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion, seeing performances at local theaters, and of course, boating on the waters of our beautiful lakes. These summer attractions bring not only an increase in population and tourism, but also additional impaired driver patrols throughout the state.
Operating a vehicle while impaired is a serious offense, with penalties including a mandatory license suspension, hefty fines, and the requirement that offenders complete a substance abuse program. A successive or aggravated conviction will also result in jail time and the installation of an ignition interlock device.
Police are on the lookout for weaving, turning problems, speeding, and general trouble with attentiveness to surroundings. They also pay attention to riders in downtown and parking areas, checking for balance, handlebar height, and leaning during stops and dismounts.
You may be surprised to learn:
- An impaired person merely sitting in the driver’s seat of a parked car could be charged with DWI.
- A drunk kayaker can be prosecuted for operating a boat under the influence.
- An underage operator’s limit is only .02% BAC.
- Refusal of a breath or blood test will result in an automatic 6-to-24-month administrative loss of license.
The Court and DMV processes come with serious risk and can be overwhelming to civilians who don’t know their options and rights. If you find yourself facing alcohol or drug-related charges, you should contact an experienced attorney.
