Possessing a Fake ID Can Have Serious Consequences
One of the biggest mistakes a college-aged student can make is to use a false identification card to gain access to a bar or buy alcohol. While it may seem like a harmless act, New Hampshire law enforcement does not take possession of false IDs lightly.
If caught with a fake ID, the cardholder can expect to be charged criminally. While typically charged as a Class B misdemeanor, with penalties including a fine of up to $1,200, the charge can be brought as a Class A misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to one (1) year in jail and a $2,000 fine. Additionally, minors in possession of alcohol, attempting to purchase alcohol, or under the influence of alcohol will face violation-level charges with penalties including fines and potential loss of one’s privilege to drive.
While the quality of fake ID cards has improved, so too has technology and training surrounding their detection. These days, it is more likely than not that fake IDs will be discovered, and the holder arrested. If you or someone you know has been arrested, it is important to have a good defense to combat the charges. Criminal and alcohol-related convictions can affect many aspects of a young person’s life, including:
- Scholarship awards
- Eligibility for financial aid
- School enrollment
- Housing
- Acceptance into the military
- Future employment
As we approach the start of the fall semester for many colleges, a conversation with underage adults about the consequences of alcohol use and fake IDs would be worthwhile. College should be a time for learning and fun – not foolish mistakes leading to arrests with potential lifelong implications.
