Boating Has Increased During Covid-19, Here Are Some Things You Should Know

Summer is upon us, and with land-based activities being limited due to Covid-19, many people are making their way to the lakes; marinas are reporting record sales and rentals. Before heading out on the water, there are a few things you should know.

Boating Education and Certificates
To legally operate a boat of over 25 horsepower, you must be at least 16 years old and hold a boating education certificate. The test can be taken and the certificate printed at https://bit.ly/37yW0ic. NH also accepts boating certificates issued by another state agency, the US Power Squadron, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and unexpired commercial boating licenses issued by the US Coast Guard or State of NH. A 14-day temporary certificate is also available from most marinas.

Age Requirements
Children under 16 years old may operate a motorboat over 25 hp if accompanied by an adult who has a valid safe boater education certificate. Note that while the kids have fun, supervising adults remain liable for personal injury or property damage during this time.

Operating Under the Influence
As with an automobile, it is illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Many people don’t realize that this applies to every type of watercraft, regardless of whether it has a motor or even a steering wheel. This means that drinking while operating a canoe, kayak, or even paddle board is off limits. “Operating” a watercraft means exercising control over it in any way, unless it is anchored, docked, or moored. BUI is a crime that carries serious penalties including suspension of your driver’s license or privileges, suspension of your boater operation privileges, fines and other penalties.

Covid-19
Social distancing and face coverings are not only recommended, but in many businesses, required; this includes most marinas.
